The Royole FlexPai 2 launch was in September 2020, but that was only in China, and there's no word on when it's coming to the rest of the world. The previous Royole FlexPai also had a third display in the spine, but it looks like the company gave that a pass this time around. Instead, users will be able to touch the Samsung-style edge panel when the phone is folded and quickly open preset apps. We're still waiting on global launch details, but the Royole FlexPai 2 has had an official launch in China, so we know about its design and most of its specs, and below we'll tell you everything you need to know about the new folding phone.

The phone doesn’t look much different from the first FlexPai but features Royole’s third-generation Cicada Wing display. The company claims that the new flexible display can withstand more than 1.8 million bends. It also promises improvements in brightness, contrast, and response time compared to the second-gen Cicada Wing display featured on the OG FlexPai.

The reason the back display is a little smaller than the front one is that it also houses the camera array, which we'll look at shortly. This sits in a long vertical panel alongside the screen, and it's pointing towards you when the device is opened, so when the device is open you'll only be able to take selfies, and you'll need to close it to take other snaps. In terms of size, the FlexPai 2 is heftier than its predecessor at 339g. That’s a lot of weight to carry. Then again, even the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is 282g, that’s just 50g shy of the FlexPai 2. Sadly, this is one of the downsides you’ll have to live with if you want a tablet in your pocket.

Royole was the first company to launch a foldable smartphone, way ahead of its more popular competitors Samsung or Huawei, but decided to stick to the Chinese market, marking its first device as practically unknown outside the domestic scene. The unveiling was a follow-up of a March event, where company CEO Bill Liu introduced the new folding screen. Now we know all the specs, the price, and the neat features that Royole hopes will make the Flexpai 2 more attractive than the Mate Xs or the Galaxy Z Fold2.
