There have been reports that Chinese mobile giants Xiaomi and Oppo as well as the chipmaker Unisoc are now set to develop their own sub-6GHz chipset in-house. DigiTimes have cited the sources from respective companies and revealed that Xiaomi and Oppo are trying to develop their own chips to power their smartphones.

As a matter of fact, we are not too surprised by this as it has become a trend in terms of what Chinese OEMs are trying to achieve. After the trouble, Huawei faced when its supply of Kirin chipsets was cut, Xiaomi and Oppo are trying to learn from the experience and likely want to diversify their sources of supply.

This is not the first time for Xiaomi to do this as they had their Surge S1 chip back in 2017 that powered their Mi 5c smartphone.

These plans are already in effect and the two companies may unveil their own 5G chipsets by the end of the year or in 2022 in the latest
