Microsoft Global Outage: Biggest IT outage in history?

A significant Microsoft outage has wreaked havoc on computer systems worldwide, impacting flights, banks, stock exchanges, payment systems, and emergency services. Approximately six hours after the initial reports, Microsoft announced via Twitter that "Multiple services are continuing to see improvements in availability as our mitigation actions progress."

Issue Resolved, Residual Impacts Persist

Several hours later, Microsoft reported that the "underlying cause for the global outage has been fixed," although residual effects were still impacting some Office 365 applications and services.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines revealed that the outage rendered it "impossible" to manage flights. "KLM has also been affected by the global computer outage, making it impossible to handle flights. ...We are working hard to resolve the problem. For now, we are forced to suspend most of the operation," stated the airline.

Stock Exchanges Hit

Stock exchanges in various countries faced operational disruptions due to the outage. The London Stock Exchange was among those affected, along with several brokerage firms such as Nuvama, Edelweiss, and Motilal Oswal. Traders in India also reported significant operational issues.

Global Impact on Payment Systems

Payment systems worldwide, including those in India, experienced significant disruptions, causing widespread inconvenience and delays.

News Broadcasters Affected

The outage impacted news services globally. Britain's Sky News, a major television news channel, reported an inability to broadcast. "Sky News have not been able to broadcast live TV this morning, currently telling viewers that we apologise for the interruption," said David Rhodes, the broadcaster's executive chairman, on X.

"We're investigating an issue impacting users' ability to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services. We're continuing to reroute the affected traffic to healthy infrastructure," the company mentioned in a series of posts on X. They later noted improvements in service availability.

A Microsoft spokesperson added, "We anticipate a resolution is forthcoming."

Microsoft listed the affected services, including:

- PowerBI: Users may find the service in read-only mode during the resolution process.
- Microsoft Fabric: Users may experience the service in read-only mode.
- Microsoft Teams: Functions like presence, group chats, and user registration may be unavailable.
- Microsoft 365 Admin Center: Admins might face intermittent access issues and delayed actions.
- Microsoft Purview: Event processing delays are expected.
- Viva Engage: Access issues may be experienced.

Microsoft’s Continued Response

Microsoft has acknowledged the ongoing issues with its Azure services and Microsoft 365 apps. "Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions," the company reiterated in a post on X.
