How promising is AI controlled Indian Traffic

The innovative AI-driven application is transforming traffic management in Delhi by offering real-time insights and strategic solutions to combat the city's persistent congestion issues. In a move towards enhancing traffic control measures, the Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation has issued a tender for the supply, installation, commissioning, and operation of an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) detection system utilizing AI for identifying legal violations.

According to a senior official from the transport department, the ANPR cameras will not only identify contraventions of the law but also have the capability to detect end-of-life vehicles, pollution certification violations, expired insurance, and stolen vehicles. This is achieved by cross-referencing the data from Vahan and other government agencies with the number plates.

The official highlighted the resource-saving aspect of the system, stating that it will aid in detecting restricted vehicles attempting to enter Delhi during special arrangements such as the odd-even scheme or GRAP restrictions.

Enhancing Traffic Police Efficiency with Real-Time Insights

The AI-powered application, named ASTraM, issues real-time congestion alerts every 15 minutes, seamlessly integrated with the e-attendance system. This integration ensures prompt notifications to junction jockeys and sector officers, empowering stakeholders with timely information for more effective traffic planning and management. The app's dashboard analytics feature analyzes various traffic parameters, including volume, congestion length, vehicle count, and type, enabling the Bengaluru Traffic Police to make informed decisions for efficient traffic management.

The system captures license plates, storing the information in a secure database. ANPR cameras check with the Parivahan database to verify a vehicle's age, pending pollution certification, and even detect instances of overloading through the power of algorithms.

Introducing ASTraM – A Revolutionary Traffic Management App

The Bengaluru traffic police department has officially launched the ASTraM app, leveraging artificial intelligence to revolutionize the city's traffic management strategies. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) MN Anucheth outlined the app's functionalities, including congestion alerts, incident reporting facilitated through a mobile application bot, special event management, and comprehensive dashboard analytics. The objective is to adopt a holistic, data-driven approach to address the traffic challenges faced by the city.

Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS)

As part of the initiative, the integrated traffic management system (ITMS) will utilize the acquired cameras to issue video-based speed violation notices to vehicles whose license plates are captured. The system generates violation alerts, allowing operators to review the captured events and take necessary actions.

Promoting Safe AI Experiences with Azure AI

The ASTraM app introduces a BOT service for incident reporting, enabling authorized sources to report field incidents and providing real-time updates to the public. Additionally, it includes special event management features, maintaining a log of major events in the city for spatial understanding and response planning.

Conclusion

In conclusion, experts express optimism that these advanced cameras will deter habitual rule-breakers. Professor PK Sarkar, former head of transport planning at the School of Planning Architecture, emphasizes the effectiveness of AI technologies in traffic management, citing a proper trial at the backend that demonstrated correct violation identification up to 99% of the time.
