The OnePlus 9 series is due to launch on March 23 and is expected to include the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro models. However, in an exclusive interview with News18, the company CEO Pete Lau confirms a third model will make it to the series. The long-rumored OnePlus 9 model will be called the OnePlus 9R 5G and will launch alongside the other two models.

The budget-focused smartphone will be an exclusive model for the Indian market, "a premium-tier device at a more affordable price point in India" aimed at mobile gaming and support for 5G. "The OnePlus 9R is targeted to empower users with smooth scrolling, immersive gaming controls and a superior viewing experience effectively bringing our flagship experience to more users.", Lau said.

"With the OnePlus 9R, we are looking to go even further to bring out a balanced handset with the latest technology and class-leading industrial design that can deliver a superior user experience overall and can also offer fast and smooth experiences for daily usage and heavy gameplay.", he added.

As per reports, the OnePlus 9R may include a Snapdragon 865/870 SoC instead of the flagship Snapdragon 888 chipset and also a 90 or 120Hz screen refresh rate. Since it is a budget device, it is debatable whether we will see Hasselblad cameras on the device, like the other two premium models.

Also, in a tweet yesterday, OnePlus India posted a silhouette picture of the OnePlus 9R teasing what-it appears-to-be, a pair of gaming triggers attached to it. It is still not confirmed by the company and with the launch event a day away, we may uncover more facts on the OnePlus 9R.
