Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 With Improved Drop Performance
Corning's Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which is said to be more powerful and durable, has been announced. The newly launched glass from Corning is said to come with improved drop performance that will protect a phone's display from being scratched on rough surfaces such as concrete.
Although Corning hasn't mentioned any names yet, it did say that several customers are testing the product and that it should reach the markets in the next few months. Now, there are a couple of smartphone manufacturers who're going to be launch smartphones in the next few months. Samsung's Galaxy S23 comes to mind, and as per a recent report, the lineup could be launching in February 2023.
Samsung has been using Gorilla Glass Victus on their current flagships, so it is highly likely that the upcoming flagships would use the Gorilla Glass Victus 2. We will have to wait and find out.
Increased Drop Performance
The first gen Gorilla Glass Victus had great drop protection last year and this time the brand is taking it way further. The Victus glass could withstand drops of up to 2 meters without getting any damage. This time, Corning has made it better by increasing the drop resistance to up to 2 meters on 180-grit sandpaper. This performance is twice as higher compared to the aluminosilicate glass from other brands.
Scratch Resistant Preserved
Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 comes with the same scratch resistance as the previous generation. This is still way better than the competition’s aluminosilicate glass. The tests done by Corning in their labs suggest that the Victus 2 Glass is four times scratch resistance than competitors. The scratch threshold of competition glass is only 2 to 4 Newtons while the new Victus 2 can withstand 8 to 10 Newtons.
Keeping the Price Low
Price is a very big factor when people buy smartphones recently and price difference also brings some drawbacks. New technology means higher prices that lead to pricy devices and people take price very seriously when comes to smartphones, especially in India. But surprisingly, Corning kept the cost of Victus 2 similar to the previous generation. This enables smartphone manufacturers to adapt to the newer version without increasing the price of their products.
Improvements over Gorilla Glass Victus One
The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 comes with improved drop resistance compared to the previous generation. Corning improved the drop protection without compromising the scratch resistance. The Victus 2 can withstand 4 times the scratch threshold compared to the competition’s aluminosilicate glass. This will give future smartphones much more protection than previous generations.
When to Expect Gorilla Glass Victus 2?
It will take some time for smartphone manufacturers to adapt to the new version of Gorilla Glass. As it is a flagship feature to add the latest version of Gorilla Glass for any smartphone and the market is now saturated with budget to mid-range smartphones. According to this, we can expect the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 to make its appearance in Q2 of next year. There is no confirmation from any smartphone manufacturers to make it clear, if the phone which is in the making right now may not feature the new Victus 2 glass.
What About Foldables?
John Bayne (Senior VP and General Manager), says that the protection for foldable smartphones is possible but we are not there yet. He said the technology has reached very close to what the consumer expects for foldable but it’s not quite there yet. So at least for a few years, we will see plastic screens instead of glass in foldable smartphones.
Corning also promises that the new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 will improve durability. In an official statement, Corning shared that the new glass has survived drops of up to one metre on a surface replicating concrete and up to two metres on a surface similar to asphalt.
The glass was said to maintain its scratch resistance up to four times better as compared to the competitive aluminosilicate. Other aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers couldn't survive a fall even from half a metre or less, claims Corning. As per the company, the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is currently being tested by multiple customers, and is expected to arrive in the market within the next few months.

Corning says that competitive aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers typically failed when dropped from half a meter or less. In addition, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 was able to survive drops up to two meters on a surface replicating asphalt and was resistant to scratches up to four times better than competitive aluminosilicate.
Conclusion
Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 will give better protection than ever, which is a good thing to have on smartphones. I really wish that the upcoming flagship from Samsung, the Galaxy S23 had this new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Stay tuned to GadgetsToUse for more such tech updates, and how-tos.
