Xiaomi launches Mi mix fold which contains a liquid lens
On the first day of the product launch, Xiaomi unveiled the Mi11 pro, Mi 11 ultra, Mi 11 lite 5G, and Mi hand 6. And, today the company has launched its new Mi mix folding smartphone Mi Mix 3 (the first foldable phone from Xiaomi).
The “liquid lens,” as the name suggests, includes a layer of liquid, and the lens’s focus and focal length are changed by applying an electrical voltage. Now, this is not the first time we are hearing about liquid lenses. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 seems like the perfect device for the Chinese maker to experiment this technology with, as the Mi Mix series has been the company’s device to experiment with new technologies.
Technically, a single camera sensor with a liquid lens can theoretically be capable of serving the purpose of various kinds of cameras, which are usually found on the rear of most flagship smartphones of today.
liquid lenses are new only in the sense that Xiaomi is bringing them to the mainstream. Huawei had registered a patent for this technology about a year ago, and companies have been researching this tech for quite a while now. There have also been reports that Samsung has liquid lens-based products in the works, and the company was expected to launch the first such devices back in 2015.
What's a Liquid lens camera?
Liquid lens technology is different from traditional lenses in how they handle focusing for cameras. So, traditional lenses use two lenses with fixed focal lenses and adjust the distance between them to change the focal length of the camera. Xiaomi says it's developed the technology itself, and that the liquid lens "has the characteristics of high light transmittance, ultra-low dispersion and resistance to extreme environments."
