YouTube Videos in Background

Assuming that you are one of those who relies on YouTube to listen to your favorite music or “listen to” the voice of interesting videos (some people just want to know what the video is talking about and don’t care about the video itself), you might have experienced a time when you need to get occupied with another app while also listening to the music/video on YouTube using your iPhone or iPad. You might have noticed that while playing a video on YouTube if you lock your iPhone or press the Home button, the music or video stops. That’s because playing YouTube videos/podcasts/audio files in the background is restricted for the users who are not paying subscribers of YouTube.

1. Use a Web Browser

Firefox apps

To watch YouTube with the screen off without paying any money, you can just use a free web browser app like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox and can enjoy the youtube videos. This method should work on all devices.

  1. Download and install Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser on your phone (your device probably already has Chrome, but the Firefox link can be found below).
  2. Go to the YouTube website within the browser, tap the settings (three dots) button at the top right of the page and tick request desktop site.
  3. Once you have completed the steps above, tap on a video to play it, and it will continue to play even after you lock your phone.

2. Pay YouTube Red Service

To fulfill the need of listening to YouTube with screen off or in the background, the first way you can try is subscribing to the YouTube Red service. This service offers background audio feature as well as gives users the power to download videos so that they can enjoy it offline. The service also takes charge of removing the unwanted adverts. Therefore, the first suggestion would be joining YouTube Red if you wish to keep YouTube playing in the background.

However, the people in most countries are not lucky enough to enjoy this feature since it is available in only several countries listed below. If you are not in the countries listed, just check the other solutions.

  • Australia
  • Korea
  • Mexico
  • New Zealand
  • The United States

3. Try a Third Party Tool

Musi App

Another way to Play Youtube Videos with screen off or in the background is using a third party tool. There are many choices for you, such as Musi, YTB Player, ProTube, and more. Here are the steps on how to use YTB Player.

Step1 – Go to the App Store and search “YTB Player” there. Install it from there for free. If there is no this app in your country, just search it in Google.

Step2 – Now, open the app and you will get a list of the newest music.

Step3 – If you wish to play something specific, you can touch on the magnifying glass icon located at the top right and then type what you want to search.

Step4 – You are also allowed to search for videos or playlists as well as create your own playlist with the help of green colored plus icon appearing tight of the video.

Step5 – Now, begin to play the video and press the Home button and you will find YouTube playing in the background on your iPhone or iPad.

4. Picture-in-picture mode in Android 8.0 Oreo

Picture-in-Picture mode

This one seems like a bit of a cheat because it’s not an app at all. Android 8.0 Oreo, the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system, supports “picture-in-picture mode,”. Which automatically pops up a miniature viewing window if you navigate away from YouTube. This window can be dragged anywhere on the screen and tapped to enlarge or to access playback controls.

It used to be that this was a feature restricted to YouTube Red subscribers only. But with the introduction of YouTube Premium, Google has begun offering picture-in-picture on YouTube to non-subscribers too. However, it won’t work with content classified as music, so you’ll still need to pay for that.

You can check what version of Android you have by going to Settings > About phone > Android version (may vary on a smartphone).

5.Simulate a Locked Screen

If you don’t care if your phone is actually locked, download Black by Neximo Labs. It is a free app available in the Play store. The app offers a way to simulate a locked screen so that you can continue to run various apps on your phone. Other free black screen apps are available in the Play store as well.
